No One But You

TU O'Nadie ( No one But You ) 'Tum Nahin to Koi Nahin'

Aired on November 14th, 1994,  'Tum Nahin to Koi Nahin' was Doordarshan's successful attempt at Mexican Novella. Telecasted at 3:30 pm in Hindi and at 11:30 pm in its English version under the title 'No one but you' every week from Monday to Thursday, the program was brought to you by televisa S A De C V, The makers of Simple Maria, the soap opera which actually inspire the first-ever soap to be telecast on Doordarshan - Hum Log. But Tum nahin to koi Nahin was not your everyday soap opera. it was a Novella - which means A short Story.

The serial starred the delectable Lucia Mendez as Rachelle, and the lead role of Antonio Lombardi is played by none other than Andres Garcia who, incidentally, was one of the judges at the recently concluded Miss World contest.

The serial was about the sibling rivalry between stepbrothers Antonio Lombardi and Maximillan Albens, which takes an ugly turn when Antonio is named the sole heir of the Lombardi Fortunes. Maximillan's jealousy for Antonio knows no bounds, and soon transforms itself into an obsession. In his bid to acquire the family fortunes without allowing any of it to pass to his stepsister Camillia, Max lays out an elaborate plan. On one hand , he pretends to be Antonio, and secretly marries Rachelle, a beautiful middle-class girl. On the other, he plots to get Antonio killed in a plane crash and marry Rachelle legally next, to be the sole heir of the Lombardi fortunes himself. But fate had something else in store for him. Antonio survives the plane crash and starts to put two and two together. But before he can make any progress in unraveling the conspiracy, he falls in love with the beautiful Rachelle. Only now the rivalry between the two stepbrothers takes a new turn. The story includes Victoria - the mother who has always tried to keep the two stepbrothers from each other's throats; Martha - the shrewd sister of leading lady Rachelle; Camillia- Antonio's sister who along with her husband, suspects Antonio's secret wedding to Rachelle; and Luis, who joins hands with Max in is devious plans to do away with Antonio.

With storyline such as this, it had all the right ingredients that went well with Indian audience, and apparently this serial had ratings higher than our regular star plus soaps like The Bold and the Beautiful and Santa Barbara.

Being telecasted four days a week, that too twice each day, this serial was only 120 episodes long, and unlike a soap opera with a seemingly unending storyline, this one came to an end 7-1/2 months later.

Hope many of you remembered this Mexican serial and enjoyed the scenic beauty of Acapulco on your TV screen.

While yours truly fortunately has the DVD of the entire serial yet Alas ! its without the English or Hindi Subtitles.

Keep coming back for more…

Yours Truly,
ET
